Japan-based artist Naomi Okubo keeps amazing me with her dazzling, detailed paintings of mysterious ladies in colorful environments. Gorgeous! I met Naomi in her studio in Tokyo last spring where she showed me some of the paintings below when they were still in progress. Before starting a new piece, Naomi creates several ‘sketch paintings’ in which she experiments with color. The sketches themselves are worked out in detail, so finishing a final piece involves a lot of time and patience, which I strongly admire.
